EXPLORING TO PHNOM KULEN NATIONAL PARK

1. Top Viewpoints – Poeng Ta Chhrounh

Approx. 9:30–10:00 AM

Begin your mountain experience with a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the lush Cambodian countryside. From the elevated plateau, you can see layers of tropical forest, distant villages and the vast landscape stretching toward the Angkor plain.

It is a wonderful place to breathe in the fresh mountain air, take photographs and appreciate the natural environment surrounding Phnom Kulen. And the places where we’ve known that ancient khmer people used to cut many stones to build the temples while of Angkor Empire.

2. Kulen Freshwater Waterfalls

Approx. 10:15–11:00 AM

Continue to the beautiful Kulen Waterfalls, one of the mountain’s most popular natural attractions. Surrounded by tropical forest, the cascading freshwater creates natural pools where visitors can relax and enjoy the cool atmosphere.

The waterfalls provide a refreshing contrast to the ancient archaeological sites and are especially attractive during the rainy season when water flows more strongly.

3. River of 1,000 Lingas

Approx. 11:15 AM–12:00 PM

Walk to the sacred riverbed known as the River of 1,000 Lingas. Here, numerous lingas and Hindu carvings are cut directly into the sandstone riverbed.

The linga represents Shiva in Hindu tradition. Ancient Khmer people associated sacred water with religious purification and prosperity, and the carvings transformed the river into a sacred landscape.

This remarkable site demonstrates how Hinduism influenced Khmer civilization, architecture and spirituality long before and during the Angkorian period. Phnom Kulen itself is closely associated with the foundation of the Angkorian Empire.

4. Preah Ang Thom – Reclining Buddha

Approx. 12:10–12:50 PM

Visit Preah Ang Thom, one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites on Phnom Kulen. The highlight is the enormous reclining Buddha, carved directly from the natural sandstone rock.

The Buddha is traditionally visited by Cambodian pilgrims who come to pray, make offerings and receive blessings. This site also demonstrates how Phnom Kulen remains spiritually important today, continuing a long tradition of sacred landscapes.

5. Shiva Linga & Ancient Hindu Spirituality

Approx. 12:50–1:10 PM

During your exploration of Kulen, your guide will explain the importance of the Shiva Linga and ancient Khmer religious traditions.

The linga is a symbolic representation associated with Shiva, while the surrounding carvings demonstrate the strong influence of Hinduism on early Khmer civilization. Phnom Kulen is particularly valuable because Hindu sacred imagery, Buddhist traditions and natural features exist together within the same landscape.

This creates an opportunity to understand the evolution of Cambodian spirituality—from ancient Hindu traditions to the Buddhist culture seen at Preah Ang Thom today.

6. About Animism Religion

Your guide can also introduce Khmer animist traditions, an older layer of local spirituality in which natural places such as mountains, rivers, forests and large rocks can be regarded as spiritually significant.

At Phnom Kulen, this helps explain why the mountain is more than an archaeological attraction—it remains a living sacred landscape for local communities.

EXPLORING TO THE TONLE SAP FLOATING VILLAGE

Approx 2:00 PM – Journey to Tonle Sap

Leave the mountain area and travel toward the Tonle Sap floodplain. As you approach the lake, the scenery gradually changes from mountain forest to lowland wetlands, rice fields and waterways.

7. Tonle Sap Lake – A Lake That Changes With the Seasons

Tonle Sap is the largest natural freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and has one of the world’s most remarkable seasonal cycles.

During the dry season, the lake covers roughly 2,500 km², while during the wet season its surface can expand to approximately 10,000–16,000 km². Its depth also changes dramatically, from around 0.5 m in the dry season to as much as 9 m during the wet season.

The reason is the extraordinary annual flood pulse. During the monsoon, rising Mekong waters push water back through the Tonle Sap River into the lake. In the dry season, the flow reverses and the lake drains toward the Mekong.

8. Freshwater Fish – The Lake’s Natural Wealth

Tonle Sap is one of the world’s most productive inland fisheries. Scientific research has recorded at least 149 fish species in the lake, while the wider Tonle Sap ecosystem supports exceptional aquatic biodiversity.

Fish are not simply a food source—they are central to the economy, culture and daily life of communities around the lake.

The lake’s seasonal flooding creates feeding and breeding habitats, particularly when water spreads into the surrounding flooded forests.

9. Local Economy & Floating Community Life

As you travel by boat through the floating village, discover how families have adapted their lives to the changing water levels.

Many residents depend directly or indirectly on the lake for:
